MEMBERSHIP ELIGIBILITY - WHO CAN JOIN NAIW?

Two questions asked the most often about membership eligibility are:

1) If a person is new to the insurance or risk management industry are they eligible to join NAIW or do they need to have a few years of experience prior to joining?

2) If a person contacts a local association about becoming a member and they are no longer employed in the insurance industry are they eligible for membership?

In accordance with NAIW By-laws under Article III - members, Section 1. Classification. A. Active. "Active membership is open to persons primarily employed or who have been previously employed at least two years in the Risk Management or Insurance Industry as defined in the membership eligibility policy." Membership is effective upon receipt at NAIW Headquarters of the membership application (official form provided by NAIW Headquarters) and the required amount of dues for both National and the Local Association.

Therefore, the answer to both questions is YES!
NAIW By-laws allows a person to join on the first day of employment in either the insurance or risk management industries. And a person who was previously employed for at least two years in the insurance or risk management industries is eligible for membership regardless of whether or not they are currently employed in the industry.
